1764: Insurrection aboard the Hope, bound for Puerto Rico (voyage 25237)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Puerto Rico in 1764, the people aboard the Hope rose against the crew. They had been taken at Senegambia and offshore Atlantic.

The record gives the numbers as: 43 people were embarked; 35 were landed.

Captain: Gould, Thomas. Flag: USA. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “captured by Spanish – after embarkation of slaves.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
