1764: Insurrection aboard the Comte d’Azémar, bound for Saint-Marc (voyage 30763)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Saint-Marc in 1764, the people aboard the Comte d’Azémar rose against the crew. They had been taken at Senegambia and offshore Atlantic.

The record gives the numbers as: 35 people were embarked; 31 were landed.

Captain: David, Mathurin. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “laid up (disarmed) or broken up in the Americas.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
