1764: Insurrection aboard the Adventure (voyage 36954)

African

On a slaving voyage in 1764, the people aboard the Adventure rose against the crew. They had been taken at Bance Island (Ben’s Island).

The record gives the numbers as: 83 people were embarked.

Captain: Miller, Joseph. Flag: USA. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “captured by slaves: ship did not reach the Americas.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
