1763: Insurrection aboard the NS de Guadalupe e Sr Bom Jesus dos Navegantes (voyage 8898)

African

On a slaving voyage in 1763, the people aboard the NS de Guadalupe e Sr Bom Jesus dos Navegantes rose against the crew. They had been taken at Benguela.

The record gives the numbers as: 380 people were embarked.

Captain: Bastos, Manoel Gonçalves. Flag: Portugal / Brazil. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “destroyed, lost or sold as result of slave rebellion.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
