1763-00-00: (Jesuits Expelled From Haiti, Part of the Broader Bourbon Campaign Against Jesuit Influence Across the French Empire): In 1763, the Jesuits were expelled from Haiti, part of the broader campaign by the French Bourbon monarchy to curtail the influence of the Jesuit order across the empire. The expulsion removed one of the few institutional forces that had occasionally, if inconsistently, advocated for marginally less brutal treatment of the enslaved, though the Jesuits themselves were slaveholders and participants in the colonial system.
