1758: Insurrection aboard the Drie Gezusters, bound for St. Eustatius (voyage 10528)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at St. Eustatius in 1758, the people aboard the Drie Gezusters rose against the crew. They had been taken at Boary.

The record gives the numbers as: 405 people were embarked; 402 were landed; 3 died on the crossing.

Captain: Santleven, Hendrik. Flag: Netherlands. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “captured by British – after disembarkation.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
