1757: Insurrection aboard the Vliegende Faam, bound for Suriname (voyage 11088)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Suriname in 1757, the people aboard the Vliegende Faam rose against the crew. They had been taken at Little Popo.

The record gives the numbers as: 247 people were embarked; 195 were landed; 52 died on the crossing.

Captain: Moor, Pieter de. Flag: Netherlands. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
