1755: Insurrection aboard the Jeune Mars, bound for Martinique (voyage 30709)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Martinique in 1755, the people aboard the Jeune Mars rose against the crew. They had been taken at Sierra Leone estuary.

The record gives the numbers as: 142 people were embarked; 103 were landed; 39 died on the crossing.

Captain: Robart, Jean-Laurent. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
