1754: Insurrection aboard the Elizabeth, bound for Kingston (voyage 36161)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Kingston in 1754, the people aboard the Elizabeth rose against the crew. They had been taken at Anomabu, Adja, Agga.

The record gives the numbers as: 70 people were embarked; 62 were landed; 8 died on the crossing.

Captain: Carpenter, Thomas. Flag: USA. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “sold slaves in Americas – subsequent fate unknown.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
