1754: A rising planned aboard the Middelburgs Welvaren, bound for Suriname (voyage 10869)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Suriname in 1754, the people aboard the Middelburgs Welvaren planned a rising that the crew discovered before it broke. They had been taken at Windward Coast.

The record gives the numbers as: 220 people were embarked; 217 were landed; 4 died on the crossing.

Captain: Kerkhoven, Jan van. Flag: Netherlands. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
