1752-Oct. Revolts and Maritime Agency: A violent insurrection occurred on the ship Marlborough of Bristol just three days after it sailed from the bar of Bonny on the African coast. Captives who had been allowed on deck to assist with navigation seized weapons and killed Captain Codd and thirty-five members of the crew. The insurgents successfully repelled an attempt by another British vessel, the Hawk, to retake the ship by utilizing the vessel’s own great guns. Ultimately, about 150 captives stood out to sea with the intent of returning to their home country, despite having no experienced navigator on board.
