1750-1804: The majority of the slave trade organized in Bordeaux occurred in the latter half of the eighteenth century, after other European ports had established themselves at major African outlets. To find its niche, Bordeaux developed the strongest trading connection of any French port to Southeast Africa. Vessels from this city transported captives to the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean as well as to the French Caribbean. This geographic diversification allowed Bordeaux to sustain its slaving operations until the early nineteenth century.
