1749: Insurrection aboard the Prince d’Orange, bound for Cayes (Les) (voyage 30518)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Cayes (Les) in 1749, the people aboard the Prince d’Orange rose against the crew. They had been taken at Whydah.

The record gives the numbers as: 243 people were embarked; 197 were landed.

Captain: Broban, Jacques. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “shipwrecked or destroyed – unspecified.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
