1748-March-01: British forces launched a direct military attempt to gain a foothold in Saint-Domingue by capturing St. Louis on the southern coast. This was one of the few large-scale military efforts by the British against the French portion of the island during the eighteenth century. The expedition highlighted the ongoing strategic vulnerability of the colony to naval attack. Although the British were eventually forced to withdraw, the event reinforced French fears regarding the security of their “finest and richest colony”. Logan uses this military action to contextualize the deep-seated anxieties that would later influence French diplomatic policy during the American Revolution.
