1743: Insurrection aboard the Maure, bound for Cul-de-Sac (voyage 30457)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Cul-de-Sac in 1743, the people aboard the Maure rose against the crew. They had been taken at Whydah.

The record gives the numbers as: 329 people were embarked; 296 were landed; 33 died on the crossing.

Captain: Richard, Georges. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
