1740: Attack from shore on the Patience, bound for St. Eustatius (voyage 36973)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at St. Eustatius in 1740, the Patience was attacked from the shore. The people aboard had been taken at Anomabu, Adja, Agga.

The record gives the numbers as: 129 people were embarked; 107 were landed; 29 died on the crossing.

Captain: Scott, George. Flag: USA. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “shipwrecked or destroyed, after disembarkation.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
