1731: Shore attack on the boats of the John and Ann, bound for Barbados (voyage 76750)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Barbados in 1731, the John and Ann had its boats attacked from the shore. The people aboard had been taken at Gambia.

The record gives the numbers as: 99 people were embarked; 88 were landed.

Captain: Stoneham, Thomas. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
