1729: Insurrection aboard the Union, bound for Cap Français (voyage 30209)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Cap Français in 1729, the people aboard the Union rose against the crew. They had been taken at Whydah.

The record gives the numbers as: 434 people were embarked; 173 were landed; 261 died on the crossing.

Captain: Ernaud de La Rochandière, Fr. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
