1727: Insurrection aboard the Elizabeth, bound for Jamaica (voyage 78283)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Jamaica in 1727, the people aboard the Elizabeth rose against the crew. They had been taken at Cape Coast Castle.

The record gives the numbers as: 215 people were embarked; 186 were landed.

Captain: Cleveland, John. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “sold slaves in Americas – subsequent fate unknown.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
