1724: Insurrection aboard the Ruby, bound for Charleston (voyage 76694)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Charleston in 1724, the people aboard the Ruby rose against the crew. They had been taken at Gambia.

The record gives the numbers as: 143 people were embarked; 122 were landed.

Captain: Cragie, James. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “sold slaves in Americas – subsequent fate unknown.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
