1723: Insurrection aboard the Courrier de Bourbon, bound for La Balise (voyage 32859)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at La Balise in 1723, the people aboard the Courrier de Bourbon rose against the crew. They had been taken at Gambia.

The record gives the numbers as: 105 people were embarked; 90 were landed; 15 died on the crossing.

Captain: Lalande Boulon Ménard. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
