1720: Insurrection aboard the Don de Dieu, bound for Martinique (voyage 33119)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Martinique in 1720, the people aboard the Don de Dieu rose against the crew. They had been taken at Formosa.

The record gives the numbers as: 215 people were embarked; 176 were landed; 39 died on the crossing.

Captain: Masson Du Bocage, Guillaume. Flag: France. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
