1711-00-00: (Cap-Haïtien Established, the Northern City That Would Become the Cultural and Economic Capital of Colonial Saint-Domingue and Later the Site of Key Events in the Revolution and Independence): In 1711, Cap-Haïtien was established on the northern coast of Haiti. The city would become the most important urban center in colonial Saint-Domingue, the hub of the northern plantation economy, and later the stage for some of the most pivotal events of the Haitian Revolution. Dessalines would be crowned emperor there. Christophe would build his kingdom around it. Cap-Haïtien has been destroyed and rebuilt so many times by earthquakes, fires, and political violence that its persistence is itself a statement about the durability of Haitian civilization.
