1708: Insurrection aboard the Dorothy, bound for Barbados (voyage 9750)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Barbados in 1708, the people aboard the Dorothy rose against the crew. They had been taken at Cape Coast Castle.

The record gives the numbers as: 140 people were embarked; 123 were landed; 17 died on the crossing.

Captain: Ashby, Thomas. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “returned direct to Africa after bringing slaves to the Americas.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
