1702 Sept : Planter M. de Gallifet observes that slaves resort to theft due to inadequate feeding and starvation. His reports highlighted the failure of masters to provide the basic requirements for survival mandated by law. The Failure of the Code Noir. Nuance: It highlights the gap between the law (the Code Noir of 1685, which mandated feeding) and the reality of planter greed. Enslaved people used “theft” as a survival strategy against illegal neglect.
