1701: Insurrection aboard the Betty, bound for Barbados (voyage 20248)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Barbados in 1701, the people aboard the Betty rose against the crew. They had been taken at Southeast Africa and Indian Ocean islands.

The record gives the numbers as: 59 people were embarked; 47 were landed.

Captain: Langhorne, Charles. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “sold slaves in Americas – subsequent fate unknown.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
