1699: Insurrection aboard the Albion Frigate, bound for Barbados (voyage 20173)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Barbados in 1699, the people aboard the Albion Frigate rose against the crew. They had been taken at Bight of Biafra and Gulf of Guinea Islands.

The record gives the numbers as: 600 people were embarked; 250 were landed; 350 died on the crossing.

Captain: Duport, Stephen. Flag: Great Britain. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
