1693: Insurrection aboard the Fredrik Wilhelm, bound for St. Thomas (voyage 21950)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at St. Thomas in 1693, the people aboard the Fredrik Wilhelm rose against the crew. They had been taken at Whydah.

The record gives the numbers as: 738 people were embarked; 729 were landed; 9 died on the crossing.

Captain: Sage, Jean le (a) Lesage, Jean. Flag: Denmark / Baltic. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “captured by the French – after slaves disembarked.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
