1693-Aug.-25: Captain Thomas Phillips of the Hannibal departed from St. Thomas to begin a passage to Barbados that would last over two months. During this voyage, a devastating outbreak of sickness and mortality claimed the lives of 14 crew members and 320 enslaved Africans. Phillips noted that while smallpox was a common danger, it was the “flux” or dysentery that caused the most catastrophic loss of life. The financial impact was severe, as the Royal African Company lost ten pounds for every captive who perished before being delivered alive.
