1683–1691: (Inter-Imperial Warfare and the Death of de Cussy): Governor Pierre-Paul Tarin de Cussy took office in 1683, facing constant pressure to domesticate “vagabond” colonists and defend against Spanish incursions. In June 1689, de Cussy led a preemptive strike against Santiago in the east, which incited a major Spanish retaliatory invasion in early 1691. On January 21, 1691, the French were routed at the Battle of Limonade, where de Cussy and his deputy were killed by Spanish lancers. The Spanish随后 pillaged the Plaine-du-Nord, leaving nearly 500 dead and the colony in a state of ruin. This conflict underscored the fragile nature of French control over the island during the broader European war of the Grand Alliance.
