1680-1867: Regular slave trafficking from the Sierra Leone estuary began in the late seventeenth century, though the vast majority of captives were embarked during the peak period between 1750 and 1807. The trade in this region was primarily conducted on British ships, which carried an estimated total of 148,000 Africans from the estuary to American markets. Documented records account for approximately 70 percent of this traffic, with the remaining 30 percent attributed to estimated voyages. The implementation of British abolition in 1807 resulted in a rapid and permanent decline in slave shipments from this coastal sector.
