1678: Shore attack on the boats of the Santissimo Sacramento, bound for Bahia (voyage 52104)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Bahia in 1678, the Santissimo Sacramento had its boats attacked from the shore. The people aboard had been taken at Bight of Benin.

The record gives the numbers as: 408 people were embarked; 356 were landed.

Captain: Lima, Lourenço Fernandes de. Flag: Portugal / Brazil. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “voyage completed as intended.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
