1665-00-00: (France Establishes Port-de-Paix on Haiti’s Northwestern Coast, One of the Earliest Permanent French Settlements on the Hispaniola Mainland): In 1665, France established Port-de-Paix on the northwestern coast of Haiti, one of its first permanent settlements on the Hispaniola mainland. The town would serve as an early administrative center for French colonial operations in the region, a base from which the plantation economy would eventually expand south and east to encompass the entire western third of the island.
