1660-1807: Malembo, located north of the Congo River in modern Angola, served as the primary Atlantic outlet for the Kongo Kingdom throughout the duration of the slave trade. The port became an increasingly important trading venue starting in the mid-eighteenth century, particularly for French, British, and Dutch merchants. Between 1770 and 1793, these traders collectively carried off up to 5,000 captives annually to support their respective plantation economies in the Caribbean. The scale of this traffic made Malembo one of the most significant hubs for the deportation of people from the West Central African coast.
