1653-1808: Cape Coast Castle was originally constructed by the Swedes before being seized by the Danes in 1663 and finally by the British a year later. It served as the headquarters for the English Royal African Company, which maintained a legal monopoly on West African slave trading for several decades. The site eventually became a major trading venue for various independent British traders, primarily those based in London. While slave trading at the castle ended in 1808, the structure remains a significant historical landmark and is now one of Ghana’s primary tourist attractions.
