1588: Insurrection aboard the S Pedro, bound for Cartagena (voyage 28075)

African

On a slaving voyage that ended at Cartagena in 1588, the people aboard the S Pedro rose against the crew. They had been taken at Portuguese Guinea.

The record gives the numbers as: 413 people were embarked; 331 were landed; 2 died on the crossing.

Captain: Gonçalez, Antonio. Recorded outcome, in the database’s words: “sold slaves in Americas – subsequent fate unknown.”

Resistance is recorded only where a surviving document mentions it. The 571 such acts in the record are a floor. Silence in that column is silence in the archive. It says nothing about calm on the ship.
