1496-00-00: (Santo Domingo Established by Spanish Settlers, the First Permanent European City in the Americas, Built on the Eastern Side of Hispaniola): In 1496, Spanish settlers established Santo Domingo on the eastern side of Hispaniola, creating the first permanent European city in the Americas. It would become the administrative capital of Spain’s Caribbean empire and the base from which colonization radiated outward across the hemisphere. The city’s founding was possible only because the Taíno population was already being destroyed quickly enough to open the land for European settlement.
