1493-Nov.-28: Columbus returned to the northern coast of Haiti and found the fort of La Navidad in ruins and his men dead. Chief Guacanagarí blamed the massacre on Caonabo, the ruler of a neighboring chiefdom, who allegedly retaliated for the Spaniards’ mistreatment of his subjects.
