1493-01-02: (Columbus Departs for Spain, Leaving 39 Men at La Navidad Near Present-Day Cap-Haïtien, the First European Garrison on Hispaniola): On January 2, 1493, Columbus departed Hispaniola for Spain, leaving 39 crew members behind at the newly constructed fort of La Navidad near present-day Cap-Haïtien. These men became the first permanent European presence on the island, a garrison planted in Taíno territory that would not survive to see Columbus return.
