Du Fret

Commercial Law
Titre II: Des Navires et autres Bâtimens de mer (On Ships and Other Seagoing Vessels)
Chapitre VIII: Du Fret (On Freight)

Le capitaine est payé du fret des marchandises jetées à la mer, pour le salut commun; mais répartition du montant des marchandises sera faite, et leur perte supportée par la masse totale, en vertu d'une règle de proportion.

Life lesson: When cargo is thrown overboard to save the ship, the captain still gets his freight — and the loss is shared proportionally by everyone.
Notes: General average (jettison): captain paid freight on jettisoned goods. Loss distributed proportionally across total cargo mass. Classic general average principle: sacrifice for common safety shared by all interests.
