Civil Rights
Titre V: Du Mariage (On Marriage)
Chapitre V: Des Droits et des Devoirs respectifs des Époux (On the Respective Rights and Duties of Spouses)

Life lesson: A woman who trades in the marketplace or stands accused before the law needs no man's permission to defend herself.
Notes: Exceptions to marital authorization: women with separate property, public merchants, and criminal defendants may act independently in court. Recognizes women's legal agency in commercial and criminal contexts. The 'marchande publique' exception is particularly significant in Haiti's market economy.
