Les personnes vivantes ne peuvent être représentées; il ne peut y avoir que celles qui sont mortes naturellement. On peut représenter celui à la succession duquel on a renoncé.

Life lesson: Only the dead may be represented — the living need no stand-in. And you may represent someone whose own succession you renounced — the two acts are independent.
Notes: Representation limited to deceased persons (natural death only). Renunciation of the represented person's succession does not bar representation through that person. Independence of representation from acceptance. Cf. Code Napoléon Art. 744.
